Bean to Cup FAQ
No, most commercial bean to cup coffee machines use more coffee than a traditional machine per cup, typically 25% or more. It is, therefore, more expensive to produce a cup of coffee with a bean to cup machine. However, bean to cup machines make some savings in terms of milk usage, but this will vary from machine to machine.
Typically, a bean to cup coffee machine producing over 200 cups per day requires 20 Amps electrical supply or more. Also, some machines with a self-service certification require plumbed in waste as they will flush a lot of water through the machine to keep the milk system sterile.
Most commercial bean to cup machines can produce decaf as well as a regular coffee. But, companies usually quote prices without the ability to use two different beans at the same time, so the prices appear lower.
If you want the ability to produce two cups of coffee at the same time, you need two bean hoppers, two grinders and two motors so unfortunately, prices go up. Some machines have decaf slots that allow you to avoid the extra costs.

Surprisingly, it can be difficult to find out how many cups of coffee a bean to cup machine can make. A lot of brochures and websites mislead customers as they are inaccurately translated from Swiss and German. The problem is that in some countries, coffee is served in an 8oz cup, and this is half the size of what many UK coffee shops serve. Also, many machines are quoted using an espresso as the measurement for a cup, which is useless in the UK as espresso sales rarely make up even 5% of revenue.
Bean to cup commercial coffee machines vary in capacity, but the fastest can make a 12 oz cappuccino every 40 seconds.
Warning: Warranties terminate if you go over the recommended capacity don’t take any risks and make sure your machine is fit for your purpose
It is not advised, as we know of no commercial coffee machine manufacturer that covers vibration damage. It simply can’t be prevented, and vibrations can cause pipes to unscrew or fittings to come loose on your coffee machine. If possible, we would advise you to use a traditional machine. If using a traditional machine is not possible then we can advise you as to how you can minimise the risk and still use a bean to cup machine to produce coffee inside a moving vehicle. As these situations are different from the standard approach, we recommend having a quick chat with one of our experts who can give you a straight and honest answer.
Put simply, bean to cup machines are not necessarily faster, this is a common misconception. A good barista can make around 4 coffees in a minute, whereas the fastest bean to cup machine can produce 2, but only if its the same drink.
Commercial bean to cup machines are faster in the following situations:
Self-service, untrained staff environments, high staff turnover environments and anywhere there is a need to have an identical standard across different parts of your business. If you have any doubts, call us for a chat we can help you to cover all the angles.
