Where does coffee come from?

The coffee bean has had a long and rich history with its roots set in the Ethiopian highlands, where legend has it, a shepherd by the name of Kaldi noticed his goats eating berries from a coffee tree. To his amazement, his goats became so energetic, they did not want to sleep at night leading to Kaldi reporting his findings to a nearby monastery who then created the first drink using berries from the tree. From that moment on, coffee’s reputation grew rapidly and soon became a worldwide sensation through Arabian trade routes. Coffee began to be cultivated across the globe with the best suited regions between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn due to the hot climate and mountainous terrain.

Arabica & Robusta

If you’re passionate about coffee you will be familiar with both of these beans, if not by name, then by flavour. The Robusta bean has a distinctive burnt and bitter flavour due to the increased amount of caffeine compared to the Arabica which is regarded as having a superior taste and is found in premium blends. However, it is not as simple as that to judge a bean’s quality. There are a number of different variables that can affect quality such as the harvesting and drying method which will be further elaborated on in the coffee knowledge training course. This knowledge will give you the skills necessary to know your beans inside out and create the perfect coffee every time.
